SAINT LUCY

In 2011, artist and writer Mark Alice Durant commissioned me to design the logo and website for Saint Lucy, an online art journal dedicated to contemporary photography. As the publication expanded its reach, Mark launched Saint Lucy Books to further his mission of producing "elegant, idiosyncratic, and accessible books that combine words and images—celebrating contemporary photographic artists while exploring the marginal, hidden, and parallel histories of photography." I partnered with him again in 2017 to design and develop the company’s e-commerce platform, creating a refined retail experience that became the primary online storefront for Saint Lucy Books.

From a design perspective, the goal was to create a mark that felt both historical and contemporary. I studied traditional depictions of Saint Lucy and translated those symbolic elements into a simplified line illustration that could function effectively as a logo while still retaining a sense of narrative and mystery. The restrained grayscale palette gives the mark a timeless, editorial quality appropriate for an art publication, while the subtle gold accents in the eyes introduce a small moment of light—reinforcing the meaning behind the name and drawing the viewer’s attention to the central concept of vision.

Saint Lucy is known as the patron saint of the blind and protector of sight. The name Lucy derives from the Latin word lux, meaning light. Drawing inspiration from the iconography found in historic paintings of Saint Lucy, I created an illustration that references the legend often associated with her imagery—eyes presented as symbols of vision and enlightenment.

I designed and customized the WordPress theme for the site, collaborating with developer Joseph Faura to implement the design. The focus was on creating a clear typographic system and editorial layout that supports long-form reading while maintaining a clean, engaging presentation across essays, conversations and features. The site's color scheme was kept monochromatic to allow the beautiful artwork and photography to take center stage. Built on WordPress, the platform allows Durant and his team to easily publish and manage content.

What began as a small collection of posts has grown into an archive of more than 360 essays, interviews, and features, serving as a valuable resource for dialogue around contemporary photography and art.

As Saint Lucy expanded into publishing, founder Mark Alice Durant launched Saint Lucy Books, an imprint dedicated to producing elegant, thoughtfully designed books exploring contemporary photography and its overlooked histories. To support the growing catalog, I designed and developed an ecommerce website that would serve as the primary retail platform for the press.

Built on the Squarespace platform, the site was designed to showcase the books in a clean, gallery-like environment that emphasizes the visual quality of each publication. I directed the product photography, captured by photographer Jill Fannon, to create a consistent and refined presentation across the storefront. Beyond the visual design, I structured the site so Mark could easily manage the store independently—allowing him to update products, publish new titles, and fulfill orders directly. The result was a flexible, scalable platform that supports both the aesthetic and operational needs of the small press.
