American Visionary Art Museum
Media Guide & Advertising
About the projects:
From 2011–2016, I served as Director of Communications, Marketing & Media for the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) in Baltimore, MD. The museum is internationally recognized as one of the world’s only (and best) museums dedicated to exhibiting the work of self-taught, intuitive artistry. This style of art is often labeled outsider, art brut, raw art, or visionary art. AVAM defines visionary art as works created by any person who is guided by their intuition, rather than relying on formal training or traditional methods. There is no doubt that AVAM is a place that inspires visitors of all ages throughout the year and provides singular educational opportunities for students as well.
During my time at AVAM, I had the pleasure of creating the Media Guide (pictured above), a project for which I wrote and edited the bulk of the content that appears in the guide. In the design, I hoped to capture a sense of the wonder that visitors experience at the museum while providing a comprehensive introduction for journalists who were interested in covering the museum in their publications. Of course, the guide aims to answer many of the frequently asked questions media have as well. I also directed the museum’s advertising strategy, which included designing ads for all of the exhibitions, public programming, educational workshops, and general museum promotions, some of which are shown above.
Pictured above are designs I created that feature artwork such as: AVAM’s Community Mosaic Project, vehicles from the Kinetic Sculpture Race, and artwork by: Andrew Logan, Adam Kurtzman, Wayne Coyne (of The Flaming Lips), Matt Sesow, Gerald Hawkes, artists from The Cabaret Mechanical Theatre, Baltimore’s Painted Screens, DeVon Smith, Vollis Simpson, Bob Benson, Nancy Josephson, Leonard Knight, Donald Pass, Frank Bruno, Scott Weaver, and more.
